WORKSHOP

Collage and History of Art Workshop

Latitudes Team

3 May 2019

Starting on May 4 and until the end of June,
the Alliance Française of Phuket will offer a new workshop to learn history of art through collages.

Caroline Laleta Ballini, to whom we owe the design of Latitudes, and her daughter Stella, a student of Art and Design, will plunge you each week into a different universe, that of a classical or famous contemporary painter, in order to learn about the works of a great master by reinventing, cutting, and gluing while letting the imagination run wild.

At the end of each of these nine workshops on Saturday mornings, each student will have composed nine works of art. It is important to underscore that our children and adolescents possess a poor artistic and cultural foundation. Without teaching in the schools of Phuket, and without museums, they do not have the possibility to learn and admire the great painters who constitute the intellectual and cultural richness of Europe. This is why Caroline has developed a series of workshops where each child can, in a two-hour session, create a work of art starting from reproductions of a great painter.

The collage technique, developed by Pablo Picasso and George Braque at the beginning of the last century, does not require any particular drawing talent, just a fertile imagination, which all children and adolescents demonstrate easily.

Thanks to this method, the children immerse themselves totally in the style of the painter. The children master the work, the lines, the forms, and the colors, giving them back according to the child’s imagination, that is to say, by recreating a new universe through the composition of a new painting in their own style. A pair of scissors, glue, and a sheet of paper are enough to create great works.

Caroline provides the reproductions of pain- tings necessary for each child’s painting. There is no limit to the imagination and, after being involved in the universe of the painters, each memorizes their works and keeps a definite trace of it. The first painters featured will be Magritte, Van Gogh, Renoir, Le Douanier Rousseau, Chagall, Picasso, and Dali.

Caroline exhibited her collages on the great masters of painting at the Prince of Songkla University in February 2012.
