Winning, the poo
21 July 2018
The Chiang Mai Elephant Poo Poo Paper Park, an eco-friendly attraction, invites visitors to discover the process of making paper from an unusual source: elephant waste !
“Follow the Poo” says our guide Cee to invite us to discover this original attraction.
Through eight pavilions, we discover the different stages of paper production from poo collection to rinsing to final product assembly. In this outdoor museum park, we go through the traditional paper-making history in Chiang Mai, the different way to produce it, and as a bonus, the visitors are invited to put their hand in the elephant poo to make their own paper and decorate postcards or notebooks…
“Nothing is lost, nothing is created, everything is transformed,” comments Cee. “Most of the people who come to Chiang Mai are here for the elephants. Knowing that the pachyderms defecate 15 to 20 times a day, the raw material exists in quantity, hence comes the idea of making paper. In fact, you can make paper with all kinds of fibers: coconut, papyrus, wood…”
The “Poo Poo Paper” brand was created 11 years ago with products intended solely for export.
5 years ago, because of the interest of tourists for elephants, the brand decided to open this museum, to unveil this unusual process and propose an activity where the elephant is at the heart, without doing harm to the animal.
Certified “ecological attraction” by the WWF, Poo Poo Paper donates 10% of its income to the animal welfare association.
