With the “motto for a world in common”, the Agence Française de Développement (AFD) funds, supports and accelerates the transitions to a fairer and more sustainable world.
Focusing on climate, biodiversity, peace, education, urban development, health and governance, its teams carry out more than 4,000 projects in France’s overseas departments and territories and other 110 countries. In this way, we contribute to the commitment of France and French people to support the sustainable development goals.
In Thailand, the AFD is currently financing, for example, a project to promote the use of renewable energy in commercial buildings, which are responsible for 20% of the country’s CO2 emissions, in collaboration with the Boonthavorn Ceramic chain of stores, which has volunteered to install solar panels on 13 of its sites. In Cambodia, the Agency is conducting many projects in the water sector, particularly in terms of irrigation systems in rural areas, as well as a master’s degree to train engineers in the water professions.
But the key project at the moment in the region takes place in northern Laos, where the majority of tea produced is exported illegally to China, significantly reducing the share that actually benefits the population. To remedy this situation, the Laotian Ministry for Planning and Investment and AFD have just signed an agreement for a €1.5-million project to organize the tea industry in Laos in the country.
