30 Jan Phnom Penh : The Factory Factor
The Factory Factor
30 January 2019
One word which will soon be known as one of the trendiest places in Phnom Penh.
Originally, the idea was to give a second life to an old factory space by setting a technology hub there. It rapidly evolved into something bigger, becoming “not only a space to incubate young Cambodian technologists, but also artists, makers, musicians and anyone with the dedication to turn an idea into reality.”
Launched in January 2018, Factory will define itself and grow over a five-year period, allowing its residents to help determine the direction of the project. Coworking spaces, food courts and bars, an art gallery, a photo studio and even a skate park for Skateistan, a non-profit organization dedicated to children… Numerous projects are under way at Factory.
For now, the artistic dimension is particularly striking. Throughout 2018, artists from all over the world were invited to transform walls and space into a living canvas. With galleries, exhibition space and artists and makers in residence, Factory aims to be “a place to explore and find delight in hidden places”. At the same time, it takes on several initiatives to help promote Cambodian and international artists.
Factory is designed for artists, creatives and technology professionals to have short-term housing, workspace and access to an inspired community. In short, as the coworking space manager Carlos says: “This is not a conventional office. This is the office everybody wanna have.”
